Reading Ambassadors are here to make reading fun!
The Reading Ambassadors are a newly formed group of pupils who work with our Headteacher to promote a love of reading in school. They are all eager readers themselves and want to share their enjoyment of reading across the school.
The children applied for the role of Reading Ambassador by writing a letter of application which shows just how dedicated they are to this role. They all had some great ideas for how we can encourage reading for pleasure in school.
The group meets regularly to work on a wide variety of reading activities which are then shared with the school. Some of their tasks are:
- To choose Book of the Month recommendations and produce a display for this in the school hall.
- Choose new reading materials for the library, the reading shed and the class reading corners.
- Help to plan activities for World Book day.
- Organise fundraising activities to buy more books.
- Help to organise the reading for pleasure book packs.
- Look after the library and the reading shed.
- Set whole school reading challenges
Our Reading Shed
We have had a special shed built in our school playground so that children can have a quiet space to read books during break times. The Reading Ambassadors are very proud of the shed and did a great job setting it up for the school to use.
Book of the Week
The Reading Ambassadors come together to discuss some recommended reading books for the pupils in KS1 and KS2. They then create a display in the school hall so that all children in the school can see their suggestions. The Reading Ambassadors hope that this will encourage the children to try some new books.
Reading for Pleasure Book Packs
Children in school can borrow a Reading for Pleasure Book Pack that they can take home to enjoy. Each pack contains a reading book and a scrapbook that the Reading Ambassadors have asked the pupils to fill in after they have read the book if they want to. They can reflect their views of the book in any way they like but some suggestions are: draw a picture about the book, write a book review, write about their favourite character or draw the setting. KS1 and EYFS book packs also contain a teddy bear that the children can cuddle while they are enjoying their book. These book packs have been made to encourage children to read at home and to enjoy new books that the children may not normally read. The Reading Ambassadors worked really hard to put these packs together and even organised and ran a special assembly for the whole school to introduce them.
